Birmingham vs. Grand Rapids
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Interstat) — The Grand Rapids Gold look to halt a recent slide when they host the Birmingham Squadron in a G League matchup Wednesday night at Van Andel Arena.
The Gold (19-23) have lost three of their last four games, including a 126-120 home defeat to Capital City last Thursday. They will face a Birmingham squad (16-28) coming off a dramatic 127-119 overtime road victory at Stockton on Sunday.
Grand Rapids will lean on guard Dane Goodwin, who has been a consistent offensive force. He is averaging 24.5 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists over his last 10 games, including a 35-point, 6-assist performance in the loss to Capital City.
Birmingham counters with point guard D.J. Carton, who is coming off a stellar performance. In Sunday’s win, Carton logged 40 minutes, scoring 28 points with 7 rebounds and 11 assists. His recent play has been volatile, however, ranging from a 2-point outing on March 5 to the near-triple-double on Sunday. He will be central to the Squadron’s efforts.
The Squadron’s overtime win featured big nights from Trey Alexander (32 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists) and center Hunter Dickinson (24 points, 11 rebounds). Replicating that balanced attack will be key against a Gold team that has struggled defensively, allowing an average of 124.3 points in their last three losses.
This is the first of two meetings between the teams this month; they will play again in Grand Rapids on March 27. The Gold hold a slight edge in the standings, but both teams are looking to build momentum in the final weeks of the regular season.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT Wednesday.
