Mexico City vs. Grand Rapids
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Interstat) — In a game defined by dramatic swings and a frantic final minute, the Mexico City Capitanes outlasted the Grand Rapids Gold 115-112 in overtime in a G League contest Tuesday night at Van Andel Arena.
The most critical sequence of the night unfolded in the final 30 seconds of regulation, transforming a seemingly secure Mexico City lead into a breathtaking push for overtime. With the Capitanes ahead 108-102 after a Wade Taylor 3-pointer, the Gold mounted a desperate comeback.
Grand Rapids guard Curtis Jones converted a pair of free throws with 47 seconds left to cut the deficit to four. On the ensuing possession, Taylor committed a turnover, which K.J. Simpson stole and quickly fed to Jones, who buried a 25-foot 3-pointer to bring the Gold within one point with 28 seconds remaining.
Mexico City’s James Bouknight momentarily quieted the rally with a clutch 23-foot jumper, putting the Capitanes ahead 110-107 with 19 seconds on the clock. But the Gold responded immediately. After a Simpson turnover, Grand Rapids called timeout and executed a play resulting in a Dane Goodwin 26-foot 3-pointer, assisted by Coleman Hawkins, tying the game at 110 with 22 seconds left.
Mexico City had a chance to win in regulation, but Boo Buie’s pass was intercepted by DaRon Holmes. Holmes then missed a layup at the buzzer, sending the game to an extra period.
The overtime period was a defensive struggle, with both teams combining for only 11 points. Mexico City seized control early in the extra frame. After Grand Rapids scored the first four points, the Capitanes answered with a 7-0 run. The decisive basket was a deep 34-foot 3-pointer by Taylor with 1:35 remaining, giving Mexico City a 115-112 lead it would not relinquish. The Gold missed their final four shot attempts and committed a turnover on their last five possessions of overtime.
The game was a tale of consistent offense meeting resilient comebacks. Mexico City built its victory on steady scoring across all four quarters, putting up 23, 29, 30 and 26 points, respectively, before adding seven in overtime. Grand Rapids, meanwhile, relied on explosive bursts, erasing deficits with high-powered quarters. The Gold led 31-23 after the first quarter, but Mexico City used a strong second to narrow the gap and trailed just 58-52 at halftime. The Capitanes took their first sustained lead in the third quarter and entered the final period ahead 82-81, setting the stage for the chaotic finish.
With the win, Mexico City improved its season record to 26 wins and 16 losses. Grand Rapids fell to 19 wins and 24 losses.
The Capitanes continue their road trip, while the Gold look to rebound in their next outing.
