Memphis vs. Iowa
DES MOINES, Iowa (Interstat) — In a game defined by relentless offense and a staggering 274 combined points, the Memphis Hustle secured a rare and emphatic road victory, defeating the Iowa Wolves 142-132 in a G League contest Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena.
The most important part of the game was Memphis’s sustained offensive explosion across the middle quarters, which built an insurmountable lead that withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally from the Wolves. After a closely contested first quarter that ended with Memphis leading 31-29, the Hustle detonated for 79 points over the next two periods. They outscored Iowa 39-32 in the second quarter and then delivered a devastating 40-point third quarter to take a 110-92 lead into the final 12 minutes.
Memphis’s offensive execution during that stretch was fluid and multifaceted, overcoming the defensive presence of Iowa center Joan Beringer, who recorded multiple blocks. The Hustle consistently found seams, with guard Charlie Brown serving as a catalyst through steals and playmaking, while center Orlando Robinson and forward Eric Dixon provided efficient scoring inside and out. The lead ballooned to as many as 22 points, a cushion that proved vital.
Iowa, refusing to capitulate on its home floor, mounted a spectacular comeback attempt in the fourth quarter. Led by the explosive scoring of guard Zyon Pullin, the Wolves poured in 40 points in the final period. They unleashed a 17-4 run early in the quarter, fueled by consecutive three-pointers from Pullin, to dramatically cut the deficit to single digits and bring the crowd to its feet. The Wolves’ pressure forced several Memphis turnovers, turning the game into a frantic track meet.
However, the Hustle’s monumental lead and clutch late-game composure ultimately decided the contest. Every time Iowa threatened to close the gap completely, Memphis answered with a critical basket. Key plays down the stretch included a driving layup by DeJon Jarreau, a dunk from Robinson off a feed from Brown, and a series of made free throws in the final minute to seal the game. Robinson also contributed a crucial block on a Pullin drive with 24 seconds left to extinguish Iowa’s last realistic hope.
The victory marked a significant turnaround for Memphis, which entered the game with a 13-29 record and had lost to Iowa by 18 points in their previous meeting in January. It also defied statistical expectations, as pregame projections gave the Wolves a 90.6% probability to win. For Iowa, the loss snapped a positive run of form, dropping them to 24-18 on the season.
The game was a showcase for the high-octane style of the G League, with both teams operating at a blistering pace and minimal defensive resistance for long stretches. Memphis’s ability to maintain its offensive efficiency for three quarters, however, provided the foundation for one of its most impressive wins of the season.
