Mexico City vs. Wisconsin

OSHKOSH, Wis. (Interstat) — The Mexico City Capitanes used a dominant first quarter and a balanced scoring attack to secure a 116-104 victory over the Wisconsin Herd in a G League matchup Friday night at Oshkosh Arena.

The most important part of the game was the opening period, where Mexico City established a lead it would never relinquish. The Capitanes erupted for 34 points in the first quarter, fueled by efficient outside shooting and a relentless transition game. Guard Boo Buie set the early tone, connecting on multiple three-pointers, while the team’s ball movement created easy opportunities inside. Wisconsin, despite 10 points from Stephen Thompson in the quarter, struggled to match Mexico City’s offensive pace and found itself trailing by nine after one.

Mexico City maintained control throughout, answering every Wisconsin push. The lead grew to 61-50 by halftime as the Capitanes continued to shoot effectively from the perimeter. Wisconsin’s defense had no consistent answer for Mexico City’s guard rotation of Buie, James Bouknight and Wade Taylor, who consistently created shots for themselves and others.

The Herd made several attempts to rally in the second half. A third-quarter surge, highlighted by a steal and dunk from Kobe Stewart, briefly cut the deficit to single digits. However, Mexico City responded immediately, often with a three-pointer to stifle the momentum. Every time Wisconsin strung together a few stops, the Capitanes found a critical basket, frequently from beyond the arc.

Wisconsin’s effort was led by Stephen Thompson, who attacked the rim consistently, and Kira Lewis, who provided a spark off the bench with drives to the basket. Kobe Stewart and Alex Antetokounmpo also contributed key plays, but the team could not overcome its early defensive struggles or string together enough stops to fully close the gap.

Mexico City’s depth proved decisive, with contributions across the roster. LJ Figueroa provided timely scoring off the bench, and Felipe Haase facilitated the offense from the high post. The Capitanes’ ball movement resulted in high-percentage looks throughout the night, keeping the Wisconsin defense scrambling.

With the win, Mexico City improved its season record to 24 wins and 16 losses, solidifying its position in the G League standings. Wisconsin fell to 12 wins and 29 losses. The two teams are scheduled for a quick rematch at Oshkosh Arena on Saturday night.
