Long Island vs. Greensboro
GREENSBORO, N.C. (Interstat) — The Long Island Nets withstood a furious second-half rally by the league-leading Greensboro Swarm to secure a 116-111 victory in a G League matchup Wednesday afternoon at Greensboro Coliseum Fieldhouse.
The Nets built a commanding early lead with remarkable offensive consistency, scoring 31 points in each of the first three quarters. They led by as many as 18 points in the first half, capitalizing on efficient ball movement and transition opportunities. Greensboro, which entered the game with the best record in the league at 29-11, struggled to find its rhythm early, shooting poorly from the perimeter.
The Swarm began their comeback in the third quarter, outscoring Long Island 34-31 behind a surge from point guard Terrell Brown. The home team continued to chip away in the fourth, tightening the game into a single-possession contest in the final minutes. The most critical sequence came with just over 30 seconds remaining and Long Island clinging to a three-point lead.
After Greensboro’s P.J. Hall made one of two free throws to cut the deficit to 114-111, the Swarm forced a miss from Long Island’s Malachi Smith on the ensuing possession. Greensboro secured the defensive rebound with 5 seconds left, giving them a chance to tie. Jaylen Sims, however, missed both free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt, a crushing blow to the comeback effort.
Long Island’s Chaney Johnson secured the rebound after the second missed free throw and was immediately fouled. Johnson, a power forward from Alabaster, Alabama, calmly sank both free throws with 3 seconds remaining to seal the five-point victory for the Nets.
The win improved Long Island to 24-18 on the season, while handing Greensboro, which had been projected as a heavy favorite by statistical models, just its 12th loss. The two teams will meet again at the same venue Friday night.
Key performances for Long Island included point guard Malachi Smith, who orchestrated the offense and hit critical free throws late, and Johnson, whose energy and timely scoring provided a crucial boost off the bench. For Greensboro, Brown led the second-half charge with a series of difficult jumpers and playmaking, while Hall anchored the interior at both ends.
The Nets’ ability to maintain their composure after seeing their large lead evaporate defined the game. Despite Greensboro’s 63-point second half, Long Island executed in the final minute from the foul line to close out a significant road win against the league’s top team.
