Salt Lake City vs. Valley
TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Salt Lake City Stars used a dominant fourth-quarter performance to pull away from the Valley Suns for a 121-112 victory in a G League contest Monday night at Mullett Arena.
The game, a back-and-forth affair for three quarters, was ultimately decided by Salt Lake City’s explosive 38-point final period. The Stars entered the fourth with a narrow 83-86 deficit but quickly seized control with a 15-4 run to open the quarter, fueled by defensive stops and transition opportunities.
Guard Sean East was instrumental in the closing surge, scoring 11 of his team-high total in the fourth quarter, including a critical 28-foot three-pointer with 6:39 remaining that extended the Stars’ lead to nine points. His backcourt partner, Max Abmas, also found his rhythm late, connecting on a pair of deep three-pointers in the final four minutes to stifle any attempt at a Valley rally.
The Suns, who led by as many as seven points in the third quarter behind the interior play of CJ Huntley and the outside shooting of Koby Brea, could not sustain their offensive efficiency down the stretch. Valley managed only 26 points in the final period on 10-of-26 shooting from the floor while committing five turnovers.
The first half was characterized by offensive runs from both sides. The Stars opened the game with an early edge, but the Suns responded with a 12-2 run midway through the second quarter to take a brief lead. Salt Lake City closed the half strong, however, to enter halftime tied at 59.
Steven Crowl provided a consistent interior presence for the Stars, contributing key rebounds and finishes around the rim, while Matthew Murrell’s defensive activity, including two blocked shots, helped disrupt Valley’s offense at crucial moments.
For the Suns, Huntley finished as the game’s leading scorer, exploiting the paint repeatedly with alley-oop finishes and putbacks. RJ Nembhard facilitated much of the Valley offense, tallying multiple assists, and Sean McDermott added perimeter scoring, but the team’s defense could not contain Salt Lake City’s multifaceted attack in the final frame.
With the win, Salt Lake City improved its season record to 25 wins and 17 losses, solidifying its position in the Western Conference. The Valley Suns fell to 12 wins and 28 losses with the defeat.
The Stars next face the Texas Legends in a two-game home set beginning March 9. The Suns begin a four-game road trip at Rip City on March 6.
