Memphis vs. Austin

AUSTIN, Texas (Interstat) -- In a game defined by wild momentum swings and a frantic final minute, the Austin Spurs edged the Memphis Hustle 121-118 in a G League contest Sunday at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.

The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the closing 12 seconds, a chaotic stretch of fouls, timeouts and missed free throws that ultimately allowed the Spurs to escape.

With Austin leading 119-118, Memphis’ Lawson Lovering committed a personal foul with 12 seconds remaining. Kyle Mangas of the Spurs made the first free throw but missed the second. After a timeout, Lovering fouled again, sending Mangas back to the line with 12 ticks left. He again made the first and missed the second.

Memphis secured the rebound and called timeout with 10 seconds left. On the ensuing inbounds play, Lance Terry missed a running dunk, but DeJon Jarreau grabbed the offensive rebound and scored to put Memphis ahead 120-119 with just 4 seconds remaining. Jarreau was fouled on the play but missed the and-one free throw.

Austin called timeout to advance the ball. On the inbound, Memphis’ Tyler Burton committed a foul, sending Jayden Nunn to the line with 3 seconds left. Nunn missed the first free throw but made the second to tie the game at 120.

Memphis inbounded and Jarreau was fouled by Tre King with 0.9 seconds on the clock. Jarreau calmly sank both free throws to give Memphis a 122-120 lead. However, on the ensuing inbound, Burton fouled again, sending Nunn back to the line with 0.9 seconds remaining. Nunn missed the first but made the second. Austin retained possession on the missed second shot and called timeout.

On the final inbound play, Eric Dixon’s heave at the buzzer was off target, sealing the three-point victory for the home team.

The game was a tale of contrasting halves. Memphis dominated early, fueled by hot shooting from deep. Tyler Burton and Colby Jones hit consecutive three-pointers in the first two minutes, setting the tone for a 36-point opening quarter. The Hustle led by as many as 12 in the first half and took a 67-63 lead into halftime.

The third quarter belonged entirely to Austin. The Spurs unleashed a 36-point period, outscoring Memphis by 16 to turn a four-point deficit into a 99-87 lead heading into the final frame. Jayden Nunn and Adam Flagler orchestrated the offense, while Tre King provided a scoring punch off the bench.

Memphis refused to fold, mounting a fierce comeback in the fourth quarter. A 13-2 run, capped by a Lance Terry three-pointer with just over four minutes to play, pulled the Hustle within one point at 109-108. The teams traded baskets and leads down the stretch, setting the stage for the dramatic final sequence.

The loss dropped Memphis to 12-28 on the season, while Austin improved to 28-11. The Spurs have now won both meetings between the teams this season, having also defeated Memphis 102-97 on Feb. 22.
