Salt Lake City vs. Mexico City
MEXICO CITY (Interstat) — In a high-octane rematch just two days after a one-point thriller, the Mexico City Capitanes outlasted the Salt Lake City Stars 122-118 in a G League contest Tuesday night at a raucous Estadio Azteca.
The game, a back-and-forth offensive showcase, saw the Capitanes build a substantial early lead only to withstand a furious second-half rally from the Stars, who erased a 17-point deficit before falling short in the final minutes.
Mexico City established control from the opening tip, leveraging a potent inside-out attack and disruptive defense to close the first quarter with a 32-19 advantage. They extended that lead to 64-54 by halftime, shooting efficiently and capitalizing on a rash of Salt Lake City turnovers. The Stars, however, refused to capitulate. A 35-point second quarter, fueled by the backcourt duo of Max Abmas and Sean East, kept them within striking distance.
The most pivotal sequence of the game unfolded in the third quarter. After Mexico City’s James Bouknight connected on a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 17, Salt Lake City mounted its decisive response. The Stars locked down defensively and unleashed a 19-4 run, powered by consecutive 3-pointers from Justin Harmon and a series of driving scores. The surge culminated with Mohamed Bamba converting a tough basket inside to cut the Mexico City lead to just two points heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter became a tense possession-by-possession battle. Salt Lake City finally drew even and briefly took the lead on multiple occasions, but each time the Capitanes had an answer. With the score tied in the final three minutes, Mexico City executed a critical 7-0 spurt. The run was capped by a Bouknight 3-pointer, assisted by Wade Taylor, that gave the Capitanes a 119-112 cushion with just over a minute to play.
Salt Lake City had one last chance, closing to within 120-118 after a Harmon 3-pointer with 12 seconds left. Following a Mexico City free throw, the Stars had a final possession to tie but were unable to get a clean look at a 3-pointer as the Capitanes secured the defensive stop.
The victory improved Mexico City’s season record to 21-15, while Salt Lake City fell to 24-17. The game was the second of a back-to-back set between the teams, with the Capitanes also winning 120-119 on Sunday.
Mexico City’s balanced scoring and timely plays down the stretch proved the difference. The Capitanes consistently found responses to every Stars rally, particularly from beyond the arc and in transition off Salt Lake City’s 20 turnovers. The Stars’ comeback effort, led by a 37-point fourth quarter, ultimately fell short due to their inability to secure key defensive stops in the game’s closing moments.
Salt Lake City continues its road trip at Valley on March 2. Mexico City travels to face Iowa on Friday.
