Salt Lake City vs. Mexico City

Preview: Stars, Capitanes Set for G League Rematch

MEXICO CITY (Interstat) — The Salt Lake City Stars and Mexico City Capitanes will meet for the second time in three days on Tuesday night at Estadio Azteca, with the hosts looking to secure a mini-series sweep after a narrow victory.

The Capitanes (20-15) edged the Stars (24-16) 120-119 on Sunday, a result that will likely fuel the visitors’ desire for quick redemption in this G League contest.

Salt Lake City arrives with the better overall record but has lost two of its last three games. The Stars are led by guard Max Abmas, who enters in explosive form. Over his last 10 games, Abmas is averaging 19.3 points and 4.0 assists, including back-to-back 30-point performances in a two-game sweep of Oklahoma City last week. His scoring punch will be central to the Stars’ offensive plans.

Mexico City, however, has found success recently by controlling the interior. Forward Andersson Garcia has been a consistent double-double threat, averaging 12.8 points and 12.8 rebounds over his last five contests. He posted 14 points and 19 rebounds in a win at Stockton on Feb. 11 and recorded a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and five assists at Iowa on Jan. 27. His battle on the glass will be a key factor.

The Capitanes have won three of their last five games. Following Tuesday’s matchup, they begin a three-game road trip starting Friday at Iowa.

The Stars, after concluding their two-game set in Mexico, continue a road-heavy stretch. Their next home game is not until March 9 against Texas.

Tuesday’s game tips off at 8 p.m. local time.
