Salt Lake City vs. Mexico City
MEXICO CITY (Interstat) — In a frenetic G League shootout that saw 21 lead changes and was not decided until the final possession, the Mexico City Capitanes edged the Salt Lake City Stars 120-119 on Sunday at Estadio Azteca.
The game’s defining sequence, and its most important part, came in the final half-minute. With the Capitanes leading 118-117, Salt Lake City’s Sean East hit a deep 3-pointer with 58 seconds remaining to put the Stars ahead 119-118. Mexico City answered immediately, as James Bouknight drove for a layup to reclaim a 120-119 lead with 33 seconds left.
Salt Lake City called a timeout to set up a final play. Out of the break, Max Abmas’s contested 3-point attempt from the wing missed with 27 seconds left. Mexico City’s LJ Figueroa secured the crucial defensive rebound. The Capitanes ran the clock down, but Figueroa’s driving layup attempt at the three-second mark rolled off the rim. Salt Lake City’s Mohamed Bamba grabbed the rebound, giving the Stars one final chance with 1.1 seconds remaining.
After a timeout to advance the ball, Bamba’s desperation 28-foot 3-point heave at the buzzer was off target, sealing the narrow victory for the home team.
The contest was an offensive showcase from the opening tip. Mexico City set the early pace, pouring in 37 first-quarter points behind hot outside shooting from Felipe Haase and Andersson Garcia. Salt Lake City responded with a torrent of its own, exploding for 41 points in the second quarter to take a 69-69 tie into halftime. The Stars’ backcourt of East and Justin Harmon repeatedly attacked the rim, while the Capitanes relied on a balanced, perimeter-oriented attack led by Boo Buie and a deep bench.
The third quarter saw Salt Lake City build its largest lead at nine points before Mexico City closed the gap. The final period was a tense back-and-forth affair, featuring seven lead changes. Buie and Bouknight hit critical shots down the stretch for Mexico City, while East and Abmas kept the Stars in striking distance until the final horn.
With the win, Mexico City improved its season record to 20 wins and 15 losses. Salt Lake City, which had won four of its last five games entering Sunday, fell to 24-16. The two teams will meet again in a rematch in Mexico City on Tuesday.
The Capitanes’ victory was a collective effort, with eight players scoring in double figures, overcoming a 38-point performance from Salt Lake City’s Sean East. Mexico City’s bench outscored Salt Lake City’s reserves decisively, a key factor in maintaining energy in the high-altitude conditions. Despite being outscored in the paint, the Capitanes made up the difference with timely 3-point shooting and forced 19 Stars turnovers, converting them into critical transition opportunities.
