Salt Lake City vs. Mexico City

SALT LAKE CITY STARS AT MEXICO CITY CAPITANES

Preview

CIUDAD DE MÉXICO (Interstat) — A surging Salt Lake City Stars squad will look to continue its climb up the G League standings when it visits the Mexico City Capitanes at Estadio Azteca on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026.

The Stars (23-15) enter with momentum from a high-scoring 137-126 victory over Oklahoma City on Thursday. Guard Max Abmas led the charge with 33 points, six rebounds and four assists, continuing a torrid stretch. Over his last four games, Abmas is averaging 24.8 points, including a 33-point outburst in his most recent outing. His backcourt mate, Sean East, added 25 points and six assists in the win, while forward Matthew Cleveland contributed 21 points and eight rebounds.

Salt Lake City has won four of its last five games, with its offense consistently exceeding 130 points in those victories. The team’s recent success has been built on explosive scoring, though defensive consistency remains a question after allowing an average of 127.2 points over its last 10 contests.

The Capitanes (19-15), who last played on Feb. 12 in a 113-98 loss at Stockton, will look to counter with physicality and rebounding. Forward Andersson Garcia has been a double-double machine, recording four in his last five appearances. He posted 17 points and 11 rebounds in the loss to Stockton and a dominant 14-point, 19-rebound performance in a win the night before. Garcia’s presence on the glass will be critical against a Stars team that thrives in transition.

Mexico City has split its last six games and will be well-rested, having not played in over a week. James Bouknight, who scored 26 points in the team’s last game, provides perimeter scoring punch alongside Garcia’s interior work.

This matchup is the first of a two-game set between the teams, with a rematch scheduled for Tuesday at the same venue. The Stars hold a four-game edge in the overall standings, but the Capitanes have a strong 11-5 record at home this season. The key battle will be whether Mexico City can control the tempo and glass through Garcia to slow down Salt Lake City’s dynamic, Abmas-led offense.

Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. local time.
