Rio Grande Valley vs. Iowa
Preview: Vipers, Wolves Clash in Key G League Showdown
DES MOINES, Iowa (Interstat) — Two of the G League’s hottest players will lead their teams in a pivotal Western Conference matchup when the Rio Grande Valley Vipers visit the Iowa Wolves on Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena.
The game features teams with nearly identical records, with Iowa (21-15) holding a slim one-game edge over Rio Grande Valley (20-14). The Wolves won the season’s first meeting 136-129 in a high-scoring affair on Jan. 26 in Des Moines.
All eyes will be on the backcourt duel between Rio Grande Valley’s Daishen Nix and Iowa’s Jules Bernard, both of whom are in the midst of exceptional individual runs.
Nix, the Vipers’ point guard, is coming off a 32-point, 8-rebound performance in a loss to Sioux Falls on Thursday. He has been a triple-double threat for over a month, posting averages of 26.8 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.0 assists over his last six games. That stretch includes a 44-point outing and a 26-point triple-double.
Bernard has been equally dominant for the Wolves. The shooting guard is averaging 26.0 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.3 assists over his last eight contests. He torched the Vipers for 33 points and 10 assists in the January victory and is fresh off a 25-point, 9-assist effort in a loss to Austin on Feb. 11.
The Vipers will look to bounce back from a 123-106 road loss to Sioux Falls, where despite Nix’s output, the team defense struggled. Cameron Matthews added 15 points and 11 rebounds in that contest.
Iowa has dropped its last two games, both to Austin, after winning three straight. In their most recent loss, Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 36 points for the Wolves, while center Rocco Zikarsky controlled the paint with 15 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks.
Both teams are jockeying for playoff positioning in a tight conference race. The Vipers’ upcoming schedule features a lengthy homestand, while the Wolves will embark on a West Coast road trip after this contest.
Sunday’s tipoff is set for 4 p.m. CST at Wells Fargo Arena.
