South Bay vs. Texas
FRISCO, Texas (Interstat) -- The South Bay Lakers withstood a persistent challenge from the Texas Legends to secure a 104-99 victory in a G League matchup Saturday night at Dr Pepper Arena, completing a two-game road sweep.
The Lakers, who also won here Friday night, improved to 20-15. The Legends fell to 13-24.
South Bay established an early offensive rhythm, building a 33-24 lead after the first quarter behind a sharp-shooting start. The Legends responded in the second quarter, outscoring the Lakers 28-24 to trim the deficit to five points at halftime, 57-52.
The third quarter proved decisive. Texas closed the gap to a single possession on multiple occasions, but South Bay repeatedly answered with critical baskets to maintain its cushion. A key sequence began when Bronny James converted a running layup off a feed from R.J. Davis with 6:48 left in the period, pushing the lead to 75-68 and forcing a Texas timeout.
The Legends continued to threaten, but the Lakers closed the quarter with a 23-26 edge to carry an 80-78 lead into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, Texas tied the game at 82 on a Jordan Hall 3-pointer with 9:30 remaining. South Bay immediately responded with a Malik Williams layup and free throw. The Lakers then created crucial separation with a 7-0 run, capped by consecutive driving layups from Davis, to take a 91-82 advantage with 4:45 to play.
Texas made one final push, closing to within 99-95 after a Ryan Nembhard 3-pointer with 6 seconds left. Drew Timme then sank two free throws with 0.6 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
The most important part of the game was South Bay’s consistent ability to answer every Texas rally, particularly in the second half. Each time the Legends drew close, the Lakers executed in key moments, whether through Davis’ scoring, Timme’s interior play, or timely defensive stops, preventing Texas from ever taking the lead after the opening minutes.
Davis led the Lakers’ balanced attack. James provided playmaking and defensive energy, notably blocking a Jack Gohlke 3-point attempt late in the fourth quarter. Timme was a steady presence inside, and Chris Manon contributed defensively with multiple steals.
For Texas, Nembhard orchestrated the offense and Hall provided a scoring spark off the bench. Moussa Cisse was active around the rim, and Mark Armstrong attacked consistently in the second half to keep the Legends within striking distance.
South Bay next visits the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Wednesday. Texas hosts the Vipers next Saturday.
