Osceola vs. Grand Rapids
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Interstat) — The Osceola Magic used a dominant second-quarter surge to pull away from the Grand Rapids Gold and secure a 121-95 victory in a G League matchup Saturday night at Van Andel Arena.
The game was closely contested early, with the Gold holding a narrow 21-20 lead after the first quarter. The momentum shifted decisively in the second period, as the Magic’s offense erupted for 38 points. A key sequence saw Osceola’s backcourt ignite a run. Guard Ja’Vonte Smart connected on a 3-pointer off an assist from Lester Quinones, and after a Grand Rapids basket, Smart hit another three, this time also assisted by Quinones, to extend the lead.
The Magic’s barrage continued as forward Phillip Wheeler and guard Alex Morales contributed from beyond the arc. A driving layup from Justin Minaya capped the explosive quarter, giving Osceola a 58-45 halftime advantage it would not relinquish.
Osceola maintained control throughout the second half, outscoring Grand Rapids in the third quarter 30-20 to put the game out of reach. The Magic’s ball movement and perimeter shooting proved too much for the Gold defense, as the lead grew to as many as 30 points in the final period.
The Magic improved their season record to 23-11 with the win, while the Gold fell to 17-19.
Osceola’s balanced attack was led by its starting backcourt. Smart orchestrated the offense with timely shooting and playmaking, while Quinones provided scoring punch from the wing. In the frontcourt, center Colin Castleton anchored the defense with multiple shot blocks and rebounds, influencing the game on both ends.
For Grand Rapids, center Moses Brown was a consistent interior presence, scoring efficiently around the basket. Guard Dane Goodwin offered perimeter scoring, and Curtis Jones facilitated the offense for stretches, but the team struggled to contain Osceola’s offensive rhythm after the first quarter.
The most important segment of the game was undoubtedly the Magic’s 38-point second quarter. After a slow start offensively in the first period, they found their rhythm with a combination of transition play, sharp 3-point shooting, and unselfish ball movement. This 12-minute stretch transformed a one-point deficit into a 13-point halftime lead, establishing a cushion that allowed Osceola to manage the game comfortably for the remainder of the night. The Gold never mounted a sustained threat after the intermission.
The two teams will meet again at Van Andel Arena on Monday.
