Long Island vs. Birmingham
Preview of G League Game: Long Island Nets at Birmingham Squadron
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — The Long Island Nets look to complete a road sweep of the Birmingham Squadron when the G League teams meet again Friday night at Legacy Arena.
The Nets (21-16) dominated the first matchup, winning 121-103 on Thursday night. They will aim for a repeat performance against a Squadron team (13-26) mired near the bottom of the standings.
Long Island enters with momentum, having won seven of its last 10 games. A key catalyst has been forward Jeenathan Williams, who is averaging 20.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists over his last 10 contests. Williams is coming off a 30-point, 7-rebound performance in Thursday’s win over Birmingham and has scored 24 or more points in three of his last four games.
Birmingham, which has lost three straight and 10 of its last 13, will need a significant response to avoid the back-to-back losses on its home floor. Forward Garrison Brooks will be a focal point after a recent explosive outing. Despite the team’s 141-103 loss to Rip City on Feb. 12, Brooks logged 42 minutes and scored a season-high 37 points with eight rebounds. His production, however, has been inconsistent; he was held to just two points in 14 minutes against Cleveland on Jan. 24.
The Squadron’s recent victory came on Feb. 10, a 124-110 win at Wisconsin, but they have struggled to find sustained success. Defensive lapses have been a persistent issue, as evidenced by allowing an average of 122.3 points over their last three defeats.
Following Friday’s game, Long Island returns home to begin a three-game stand starting Monday against Maine. Birmingham embarks on a two-game road trip, beginning Tuesday at Capital City.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST at Legacy Arena.
