Rip City vs. Mexico City
MEXICO CITY (Interstat) — The Mexico City Capitanes used a dominant third quarter and a balanced offensive attack to pull away from the Rip City Remix for a 130-104 victory in a G League contest Sunday at a packed Estadio Azteca.
The game turned decisively in the third period. After trailing by just four points at halftime, 60-56, the Remix saw the Capitanes erupt for 35 points in the quarter while holding Rip City to 27. Mexico City’s surge, fueled by a 15-5 run midway through the period, stretched a narrow lead to 95-83 entering the final frame and effectively sealed the outcome.
The most important part of the game was Mexico City’s immediate and sustained response to any Rip City momentum in the first half, which set the stage for the third-quarter knockout. The Remix, who shot consistently but unspectacularly across all four quarters, never led after the opening minutes. Each time Rip City mounted a challenge, the Capitanes answered with a burst of scoring, often from different sources, preventing the visitors from ever establishing rhythm or defensive confidence.
Mexico City’s depth was on full display. Point guard Wade Taylor, a Dallas native, orchestrated the offense with timely playmaking and scoring, while fellow guard Boo Buie provided a steady backcourt presence. Forwards Andersson Garcia of the Dominican Republic and L.J. Figueroa were constant threats inside and out, and James Bouknight offered explosive scoring spurts. This collective effort overwhelmed a Remix team that relied heavily on guards Sean Pedulla and Cameron Parker, along with forward Blake Hinson, for production.
The Capitanes set the tone early, closing the first quarter on a 7-0 run, capped by a Ahmad Caver 3-pointer at the buzzer, to take a 31-25 lead. Rip City hung close in the second, cutting the deficit to 36-33 after back-to-back 3-pointers from Hinson. But Mexico City again had an answer, rebuilding its lead to as many as nine before settling for the four-point halftime advantage.
The third-quarter explosion made the final period a formality, with Mexico City’s lead ballooning to as many as 26 points as both teams emptied their benches. Esteban Ezequiel Roacho Amador scored the final points for the Capitanes on free throws in the closing seconds.
With the win, Mexico City improved its season record to 18-13 across all competitions, while Rip City fell to 18-14. The two teams will meet again in a quick rematch at the same venue on Tuesday.
The victory was in line with pregame projections from Interstat’s ELO system, which gave the Capitanes a 63.3 percent probability to win. Mexico City’s efficient offense and ability to control the game’s tempo after the first quarter proved those projections correct, handing the Remix a decisive defeat to open their two-game series.
