Memphis vs. Motor City

WALKER, Mich. (Interstat) — The Memphis Hustle, defying heavy odds, staged a dominant fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Motor City Cruise 120-109 in a G League matchup Sunday at DeltaPlex Arena.

Entering the final period trailing 95-89, the Hustle unleashed a 31-14 run over the final 12 minutes, completely stifling the Cruise offense to secure just their 10th win of the season. Motor City, which led for much of the contest and held a 64-58 advantage at halftime, saw its offense collapse when it mattered most, managing only 14 points in the fourth quarter.

The game’s decisive shift came during a blistering Memphis stretch early in the final period. With the Hustle down six, Tyler Burton and Charlie Brown ignited a 15-2 run that flipped the game on its head. Burton, a 6-foot-7 power forward, drilled a 26-foot 3-pointer, and Brown followed with a jumper and a 3-pointer of his own. Lucas Williamson then capped the surge with another 3-pointer, forcing a Motor City timeout with Memphis suddenly ahead 104-99 with 9:45 remaining.

The Cruise never recovered. Their offense, which had been efficient through three quarters, became stagnant and error-prone. Memphis capitalized with relentless defense, blocking four shots in the final quarter, including two crucial denials by center Abou Ousmane of Brooklyn, New York. Meanwhile, Burton continued his scoring onslaught, hitting two more 3-pointers in the period to extinguish any hope of a Motor City comeback.

Burton’s performance was central to the Hustle’s victory, providing consistent scoring and playmaking throughout the contest. Brown, a 6-foot-7 small forward, offered critical two-way play, including a key block on Wendell Moore during the fourth-quarter run. For Motor City, Moore, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, and Isaac Jones, a 6-foot-9 power forward, powered the early attack but were contained when Memphis tightened its defense late.

The victory marked a significant upset, as statistical models heavily favored the Cruise, projecting them with an 81.10% probability to win. It also provided a bright spot for a struggling Memphis team, which improved to 10-19 across all competitions. Motor City fell to 15-17.

The two teams will meet again in a rematch Tuesday at the same venue.
