Rio Grande Valley vs. Iowa
(Interstat) — In a high-octane offensive showcase typical of the G League, the Iowa Wolves outlasted the visiting Rio Grande Valley Vipers 136-129 on Monday night at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The game turned decisively in the third quarter, where Iowa’s explosive scoring run ultimately provided the cushion needed to withstand a late Vipers rally.
The contest began at a frenetic pace, with both teams trading baskets throughout a first quarter that ended with Iowa holding a narrow 39-38 lead. The Vipers seized control in the second period, tightening their defense to outscore the Wolves 32-24 and take a 70-63 advantage into halftime. Rio Grande Valley’s Tristen Newton and J.D. Davison orchestrated the offense effectively, while Efe Abogidi provided an inside presence.
The trajectory of the game shifted dramatically after halftime. The Iowa Wolves unleashed a devastating third-quarter performance, outscoring Rio Grande Valley 44-22. The period was defined by a relentless offensive barrage led by Jules Bernard and Jalen Crutcher. Bernard, the Wolves’ top star, facilitated and scored in equal measure, while Crutcher caught fire from beyond the arc. The Wolves’ ball movement was crisp, and they capitalized on several Vipers turnovers to ignite their transition game. Center Rocco Zikarsky of Sunshine Coast, Australia, dominated the paint during the run, securing key rebounds and finishing at the rim to complete a double-double. By the time the quarter ended, Iowa had transformed a seven-point deficit into a 107-92 lead.
Rio Grande Valley refused to capitulate, mounting a fierce comeback in the final frame. The Vipers scored 37 points in the fourth quarter, relentlessly attacking the basket. Davison and Newton continued their stellar performances, driving into the lane and creating opportunities. The Vipers chipped away at the lead, closing the gap to a single possession in the final minutes. However, the Wolves managed to secure crucial stops and hit enough free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Jules Bernard led all players with a masterful performance for Iowa, scoring 33 points and dishing out 10 assists. Jalen Crutcher added 26 points, and Rocco Zikarsky controlled the glass with 22 points and 15 rebounds. For the Vipers, J.D.
