Rio Grande Valley vs. Iowa

Preview: Vipers, Wolves Meet in Key G League Showdown

DES MOINES, Iowa (Interstat) — Two teams riding hot streaks and locked in a tie in the standings will clash Monday when the Rio Grande Valley Vipers visit the Iowa Wolves in a G League matchup at Wells Fargo Arena.

Both teams enter with identical 16-12 records. The Vipers have won four of their last five, including a 134-112 rout of Rip City on Saturday. The Wolves have been similarly potent, winning three of their last four, most recently a 127-109 victory over Memphis on Saturday.

The game features a compelling duel between two of the league’s top performers. Rio Grande Valley is led by guard Daishen Nix, who is in the midst of a dominant stretch. Over his last 10 games, Nix has averaged 20.6 points, 8.4 rebounds and 7.2 assists, recording four triple-doubles in that span. In his last outing, he posted 23 points and 12 rebounds in a win.

Iowa will counter with center Rocco Zikarsky, a formidable force in the paint. Zikarsky is coming off a 20-rebound performance on Jan. 19 and has averaged 14.3 points and 9.0 rebounds over his last 10 contests. His presence will test a Vipers interior defense that has allowed 120 or more points in seven of its last ten games.

The Vipers’ offense has been explosive, scoring at least 126 points in five of their last six victories. However, they have also shown vulnerability on the road, including lopsided losses at Mexico City earlier this month. Iowa has been strong at home lately, winning two straight in Des Moines by an average of 17 points.

This contest is the first of two meetings between the teams this season. They are scheduled to play again in Des Moines on Feb. 22. For now, Monday’s winner will gain sole possession of a winning record and crucial momentum in the Western Conference standings.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CST. Iowa continues a brief homestand against Mexico City on Tuesday, while Rio Grande Valley travels to face Oklahoma City on Feb. 1.
