Austin vs. Valley
TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Austin Spurs built a massive early lead and withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Valley Suns to secure a 102-91 victory in a G League contest Sunday at Mullett Arena.
The game’s defining stretch was its opening act, as Austin dominated the first half to take a commanding 63-43 lead into halftime. The Spurs opened the game on a 15-2 run, highlighted by early plays from Stanley Umude and James Banks. Umude connected on a 27-foot 3-pointer for Austin’s first points, and Banks followed with an offensive rebound and tip-in. Valley struggled to find any offensive rhythm, committing several early turnovers and missing eight of its first nine shot attempts.
Austin’s offensive execution continued unabated in the second quarter. The Spurs shot efficiently from the field and consistently generated high-percentage looks, extending their lead to as many as 24 points. Umude was instrumental, hitting multiple 3-pointers, while point guard Elfrid Payton facilitated effectively, dishing out several assists. The Suns, by contrast, could not string together stops or sustained scoring, with Damion Baugh serving as their primary source of offense in the half.
The most important part of the game, however, was Valley’s determined comeback attempt in the final period. Trailing by 18 points entering the fourth quarter, the Suns unleashed a 31-point quarter, outscoring Austin by 16 in the frame. Valley’s surge was fueled by improved defensive pressure and hot outside shooting. Jaden Shackelford and Rasheer Fleming hit crucial 3-pointers, and a driving layup by Damion Baugh with 3:50 remaining cut the deficit to 84-72, prompting an Austin timeout.
The Suns continued to chip away, closing to within nine points in the final minute. But the Spurs, who had seen their offense stagnate in the fourth, managed just enough from the free-throw line to seal the win. Umude and Donovan Williams made key free throws in the final minute to keep Valley at bay, and a last-second 3-pointer by Shackelford provided the final margin.
With the win, Austin improved its season record to 20-7, solidifying its position near the top of the league standings. The Suns fell to 8-20 with the loss.
The two teams are scheduled for a quick rematch Tuesday afternoon at Mullett Arena.
