Mexico City vs. South Bay

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Interstat) — Fresh off a narrow victory over their hosts just two days prior, the Mexico City Capitanes (16-11) return to face the South Bay Lakers (12-12) in a quick rematch Saturday at the UCLA Health Training Center.

The Capitanes edged the Lakers 66-63 in a defensive struggle on Thursday, but will seek a more characteristic offensive performance. Mexico City has won eight of its last ten games, including a 113-101 victory over San Diego on Tuesday. Guard Boo Buie has been instrumental, averaging 18.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists over his last ten contests. He scored 21 points in Tuesday’s win.

South Bay looks to halt a two-game skid and exact revenge after Thursday’s low-scoring loss. The Lakers fell 126-119 at Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday despite efficient play from forward Arthur Kaluma, who posted 17 points and five rebounds in just 19 minutes. Kaluma has scored in double figures in seven of his last eight appearances.

Mexico City’s offense, which has topped 120 points six times since Dec. 30, will test a South Bay defense that has allowed an average of 121.3 points in its last three outings. The Capitanes’ backcourt of Buie and James Bouknight, who had 28 points against San Diego, provides a potent scoring tandem.

The Lakers will counter with Kaluma’s interior presence and the guard play of R.J. Davis, who is coming off a 24-point performance. South Bay has shown resilience at home, winning three of its last four in El Segundo.

Saturday’s contest is the second of a two-game set between the teams. Following the game, Mexico City travels to face Iowa on Tuesday, while South Bay prepares to host College Park.
