Valley vs. Santa Cruz

BONNY DOON, Calif. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in a difficult season will meet Saturday when the Valley Suns visit the Santa Cruz Warriors in a G League matchup at Kaiser Permanente Arena.

Both clubs enter with identical 6-17 records, though the visiting Suns (6-16) hold a slight edge in the standings. The season series has been tightly contested, with Valley taking two of the first three meetings, including a 114-106 victory in Santa Cruz on Dec. 7.

The Suns are led by guard Damion Baugh, who is in the midst of a stellar individual stretch. Over his last five games, Baugh is averaging 26.6 points, 9.2 rebounds and 9.4 assists, including a 30-point, 8-rebound, 7-assist performance in a 130-123 loss to Iowa on Tuesday. In the Jan. 7 win over Oklahoma City, he posted a triple-double with 28 points, 10 rebounds and 15 assists.

Valley has shown a potent offense, scoring 123 or more points in four of its last five outings, but has struggled to secure stops, losing three of those games.

Santa Cruz looks to snap a two-game skid after falling 122-118 at Mexico City on Sunday. Guard Taevion Kinsey, a key player for the Warriors, contributed 11 points, five rebounds and five assists in that loss. Kinsey has been a consistent contributor, scoring in double figures in seven of his last nine games.

The Warriors will need a better defensive effort after allowing an average of 121.5 points in their two losses in Mexico City. Center Marques Bolden provided a bright spot with 20 points and five rebounds in the most recent defeat.

With both teams languishing near the bottom of the standings, Saturday’s game represents a critical opportunity to build confidence and climb out of the cellar. The Suns will aim to leverage Baugh’s dynamic playmaking, while the Warriors hope home-court advantage at their Bonny Doon arena can help steady their recent form.

The teams will meet again at the same venue on Monday, Jan. 19, concluding a quick two-game set.
