Rio Grande Valley vs. Mexico City

Preview: Rio Grande Valley Vipers at Mexico City Capitanes

MEXICO CITY (Interstat) — A pivotal G League matchup with playoff implications tips off Wednesday when the Rio Grande Valley Vipers visit the Mexico City Capitanes at Estadio Azteca.

Both teams enter the contest with nearly identical records and momentum. The Capitanes (13-10) hold a slim edge over the Vipers (12-10) in the standings and are riding a five-game winning streak. The Vipers have won two straight, including a 131-119 victory over Greensboro on Saturday.

The game features a marquee point guard duel. Rio Grande Valley’s Daishen Nix is in elite form, averaging a near triple-double over his last eight games. He is coming off a dominant 35-point, 9-rebound, 12-assist performance. For Mexico City, Boo Buie has been a catalyst during the win streak, scoring 20 or more points in three of the last five contests, including a 29-point outing on Jan. 9.

This is the second meeting in as many nights between the clubs, following a Tuesday matchup. They split a two-game series in early December, with each team winning on its home floor.

For the Vipers, supporting Nix’s all-around play will be key. Center Efe Abogidi, who had 23 points and nine rebounds Saturday, provides an interior presence. The Capitanes counter with a balanced attack; in their last win, four players scored in double figures, led by Buie’s 20 points and eight rebounds.

The venue adds to the spectacle, as the Capitanes will host at the famed Estadio Azteca, one of the largest stadiums in the world.

A win would allow the Vipers to draw even with Mexico City in the loss column, while the Capitanes aim to solidify their position and extend their streak to six.

Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. local time Wednesday.
