Texas vs. Memphis
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (Interstat) — In a high-octane G League shootout defined by offensive efficiency and a decisive edge from beyond the arc, the Texas Legends outlasted the Memphis Hustle 132-123 on Wednesday night at the DeSoto Civic Center.
The game, which featured 255 combined points, saw the Legends leverage superior three-point shooting and ball security to secure the road victory and improve to 12-13. Memphis fell to 8-15.
Texas guard Mark Armstrong led all scorers with 27 points, continuing a strong stretch of play for the Legends. He was instrumental in pacing an offense that shot 50% from three-point range, connecting on 22 of 44 attempts. Memphis, by contrast, made only 10 of 30 from deep.
The most critical phase of the game came in the third quarter. After a first half that ended with Texas leading 70-65 in a back-and-forth affair, the Legends opened the second half with a 15-5 run to establish their first double-digit lead. Memphis struggled offensively out of the break, managing only 25 points in the period on 10-of-30 shooting from the floor. Texas, meanwhile, maintained its offensive pressure to take a 101-90 lead into the final quarter.
Memphis made several pushes in the fourth, closing to within six points on multiple occasions, but each time Texas answered with a crucial basket. A key sequence occurred with just under a minute to play and Texas leading 124-121. Memphis’ DeJon Jarreau committed a turnover, followed immediately by a foul, sending Texas’ Jeremiah Robinson-Earl to the line where he made both free throws to extend the lead to five with 52 seconds left. The Hustle could not recover.
While Memphis won the rebounding battle 37-28 and shot a higher percentage from the field overall, Texas’ advantages in other areas proved overwhelming. The Legends committed only seven turnovers, forcing 15 by the Hustle. That led to a 12-6 edge in steals and a 28-9 advantage in points off turnovers. Texas also went 18 for 19 from the free-throw line.
Robinson-Earl added 20 points, six rebounds and three blocks for Texas. Sheldon Edwards scored 21 points, and D’Moi Hodge contributed 17. Matt Cross posted 18 points and eight rebounds.
Memphis was led by Tyler Burton’s 26 points and five assists. DeJon Jarreau provided a spark with 21 points and eight assists off the bench. Nate Hinton finished with 21 points and eight rebounds, and Charlie Brown Jr. scored 17.
The game’s final score surpassed the point total projected by Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 121-100 Texas win. However, the outcome defied the same service’s ELO system, which had given Memphis a 58.3% probability of victory.
Texas next hosts the Capital City Go-Go on Monday. Memphis begins a road trip at Rip City on Sunday.
