Austin vs. Salt Lake City
SALT LAKE CITY (Interstat) — In a high-octane G League clash defined by offensive firepower and a decisive disparity in ball security, the Austin Spurs outlasted the Salt Lake City Stars 118-113 at Bruin Arena on Tuesday night.
The game, which saw 11 lead changes and was tied on six occasions, was ultimately decided by Austin’s ability to capitalize on Salt Lake City’s mistakes. The Spurs forced 19 turnovers, converting them into 28 points, while committing only 10 turnovers of their own. That 12-steal defensive effort, led by a disruptive team performance, offset a dominant 54-40 rebounding advantage for the Stars, including 14 offensive boards.
Austin guard David Jones led all scorers with 34 points, adding eight assists in a performance that paced the Spurs’ attack. His backcourt mate Kyle Mangas contributed 25 points, including four 3-pointers. For Salt Lake City, center Oscar Tshiebwe recorded a massive double-double with 13 points and 20 rebounds, while small forward John Tonje, an Omaha, Nebraska, native, poured in 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Holding a narrow 106-103 lead with under two minutes to play, Austin secured key stops. A steal by Jayden Nunn with 1:13 remaining and a crucial defensive rebound by Harrison Ingram with 40 seconds left stifled Salt Lake City’s comeback attempts. The Spurs then sealed the victory at the free-throw line, with Mangas and Jones combining to make three of four attempts in the final 33 seconds.
Austin opened the game with a blistering 34-point first quarter, connecting on five 3-pointers to establish an early six-point lead. Salt Lake City responded in the second and third periods, using a 35-point third quarter to briefly seize momentum, but could never fully contain the Spurs’ backcourt. Austin shot 46.7% from 3-point range, making 13 of 28 attempts, compared to Salt Lake City’s 16-of-47 showing from beyond the arc.
The win improved Austin’s record to 16-6 across all competitions, while Salt Lake City fell to 17-7. The two teams are scheduled for a quick rematch at Bruin Arena on Thursday. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Salt Lake City had entered the contest with a 71.4% probability of victory.
