South Bay vs. Austin
LEANDER, Texas (Interstat) — In a game defined by clutch plays and a frantic final minute, the Austin Spurs edged the South Bay Lakers 107-106 in a G League thriller on Saturday night at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.
The contest, a rematch of Austin’s victory just 24 hours prior, delivered a dramatic conclusion that saw the lead change hands three times in the final 42 seconds before the Spurs secured their second consecutive win over the Lakers.
South Bay, which led for much of the night behind a strong first half, found itself clinging to a 106-105 advantage after Anton Watson sank a three-pointer with 1:25 remaining. Austin’s Kyle Mangas answered with a driving layup to tie the game at 106-106, but missed the subsequent free throw that would have given the Spurs the lead.
On the ensuing possession, Mangas redeemed himself. After a missed three-pointer by South Bay’s Kobe Bufkin, Austin secured the offensive rebound. Following a scramble under the basket, Mangas was fouled with 0.42 seconds on the clock. He calmly sank both free throws to put Austin ahead 107-106.
South Bay had two final chances to win. Bufkin’s pull-up jumper with 27 seconds left rimmed out, but the Lakers retained possession. After an Austin timeout, the Lakers’ RJ Davis saw a potential game-winning pull-up jumper from 13 feet bounce off the rim as time expired, sealing the narrow victory for the home team.
The game was a back-and-forth affair from the start. South Bay built an early lead, ending the first quarter ahead 29-28 and extending it to a 61-52 advantage by halftime thanks to a 32-point second quarter. Austin responded with a strong third quarter, outscoring the Lakers 28-22 to close the gap to 83-80 heading into the final period.
Austin’s Trey McGowens was instrumental down the stretch, contributing key baskets and free throws in the fourth quarter. For South Bay, Chris Manon provided consistent offense and defensive energy, while Arthur Kaluma and Watson hit critical shots to keep the Lakers in front late.
The win improved Austin’s record to 15-6, solidifying its position near the top of the league standings. South Bay fell to 11-10 with the hard-fought loss.
Both teams return to action next week. Austin begins a road trip at Salt Lake City on Tuesday, while South Bay hosts San Diego on Wednesday.
