Wisconsin vs. Long Island

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Interstat) — Victor Oladipo scored 25 points and dished out six assists to lead the Wisconsin Herd to a 108-101 victory over the Long Island Nets in a G League game Thursday night at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Herd, who entered the game with the league’s second-worst record, overcame a strong start by the Nets and a significant pregame projection that favored the home team. Interstat’s ELO system had given Long Island a 76.4% probability to win.

The most critical sequence of the game came in the final minute with Wisconsin clinging to a narrow lead. After Long Island’s Chaney Johnson cut the deficit to 99-97 with a pair of free throws with 2:11 remaining, the Herd’s offense stalled. A missed three-pointer by Pete Nance was followed by a defensive stop, but Wisconsin’s Stephen Thompson could only split a pair of free throws, leaving the lead at 100-97 with 1:38 to play.

Johnson again answered for Long Island, scoring inside to make it a one-point game. Oladipo, however, found John Butler for a crucial dunk to push the lead back to three. On the ensuing possession, Oladipo stole a Malachi Smith pass, was fouled, and Thompson hit one of two free throws for a 103-99 edge with 56 seconds left.

After a Long Island miss, Cormac Ryan was fouled and calmly sank both free throws with 34 seconds remaining, extending the lead to six and effectively sealing the game. The Nets managed a late layup from Tyson Etienne but got no closer.

The game was a back-and-forth affair early, with Long Island taking a 29-21 lead after the first quarter behind efficient shooting. Wisconsin responded with a 31-point second quarter, fueled by Oladipo’s playmaking and sharp three-point shooting, to take a 52-50 lead into halftime. The Herd shot 14 for 26 from beyond the arc for the game, a 53.8% rate that proved decisive against the Nets’ 11-for-35 performance from deep.

Ryan supported Oladipo with 23 points for Wisconsin, while Stevie Thompson added 18 points, six rebounds and six assists. Pete Nance controlled the glass with 13 rebounds.

Long Island was led by Jeenathan Williams with 23 points and six rebounds. Malachi Smith finished with 19 points and nine assists, and Tyson Etienne added 22 points. Tre Scott posted a well-rounded line of 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Nets.

Wisconsin improved its record to 7-14 across all competitions, while Long Island fell to 10-11. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch at the same venue Friday night.
