Westchester vs. Motor City
WALKER, Mich. (Interstat) — In a high-octane offensive duel that required an extra period, the Westchester Knicks snapped a two-game skid with a 140-132 overtime victory over the Motor City Cruise in a G League game Saturday night at DeltaPlex Arena.
The game, a back-and-forth affair featuring 21 lead changes and 15 ties, was ultimately decided in the final minutes of regulation and the opening possessions of overtime. Westchester, which led by as many as 12 points in the first quarter, saw Motor City mount a furious second-quarter rally to take a 66-60 lead into halftime. The Cruise maintained a narrow edge for much of the second half, but the Knicks clawed back to force overtime tied at 129.
The most critical sequence came in the final seconds of regulation. With Westchester trailing 127-124, Bryson Warren sank two free throws with six seconds remaining. After Motor City’s Jaden Akins converted a driving layup to push the lead back to three, Warren was fouled again and calmly made two more free throws to tie the game at 129 with six seconds left. The Cruise inbounded to Isaac Jones, who hit a contested 26-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and seemingly securing a dramatic win.
Upon review, however, officials determined Jones’ shot was released after the clock expired, wiping the points off the board and sending the game to overtime tied.
Capitalizing on the reprieve, Westchester dominated the extra frame. The Knicks scored the first eight points of overtime, all from the free-throw line, as Motor City’s offense went cold. Donovan Williams made three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt, Isaiah Roby added two, and Williams hit another to build an insurmountable 137-132 lead. Motor City missed all three of its field goal attempts in overtime and committed two turnovers.
Isaiah Roby led Westchester with 21 points and 14 rebounds, anchoring the paint with four blocked shots. He was supported by a balanced offensive effort as five Knicks scored at least 21 points. Donovan Williams finished with 29 points and eight rebounds, Bryson Warren had 27 points and seven assists, Tosan Evbuomwan added 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Dink Pate contributed 21 points.
Motor City was led by a spectacular 35-point performance from local product Jaden Akins of Farmington, Michigan. The point guard added five rebounds and five assists. Chaz Lanier scored 25 points, and Brice Williams came off the bench to provide 23 points, including several key baskets in the second-half rally.
Despite shooting slightly worse from the field overall, Westchester’s efficiency from beyond the arc and at the free-throw line proved decisive. The Knicks made 18 3-pointers to Motor City’s 13 and converted 24 of 26 free throws, while the Cruise made 14 of 19. Westchester also won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Motor City 46-43, and dished out more assists, 8-5.
The victory improved Westchester’s season record to 3-17, while Motor City fell to 8-12. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch at DeltaPlex Arena on Sunday.
