Capital City vs. Maine

PORTLAND, Maine (Interstat) — In a game defined by relentless runs and a pivotal overtime period, the Maine Celtics outlasted the Capital City Go-Go 112-109 in a G League thriller Saturday night at the Portland Exposition Building.

The contest, which saw 16 lead changes and neither team lead by more than eight points, was ultimately decided by Maine’s dominance on the glass and at the free-throw line, overcoming a blistering shooting performance from beyond the arc by the visitors.

Capital City, led by a combined 54 points from Skal Labissiere and Kadary Richmond, built an early advantage behind hot three-point shooting. The Go-Go connected on 19 of 47 attempts from deep, with Labissiere hitting five and Damari Monsanto adding four off the bench. Despite this, Maine methodically chipped away, using a 35-point second quarter to erase an early deficit and set the stage for a back-and-forth battle.

The most critical sequence came in the final minute of regulation. Trailing 105-103, Maine’s Amari Williams missed a layup but secured his own offensive rebound, only to have the ball stolen by Richmond with 17 seconds left. Richmond was fouled and made one of two free throws to extend Capital City’s lead to three. On the ensuing possession, Maine’s Kendall Brown missed a layup, but Williams again grabbed the offensive board. His put-back attempt also failed, and Capital City secured the rebound with 4.2 seconds remaining. However, the Go-Go could not inbound the ball successfully against the Celtics’ pressure, turning it over and giving Maine one final chance, which they could not convert, sending the game to overtime tied at 105.

In the extra period, Maine’s control of the interior proved decisive. The Celtics scored the first four points, all by Williams, and never relinquished the lead. A three-pointer by Jalen Bridges with 1:36 remaining pushed the advantage to five and provided the final margin, as Capital City managed just four points in overtime.

Williams, the center from Nottingham, England, was the game’s dominant force, recording 33 points, 16 rebounds and four assists. His work on the offensive glass, securing seven offensive rebounds, was instrumental in Maine’s 49-35 overall rebounding advantage and their 23-9 edge in second-chance points. Max Shulga added 16 points and six rebounds for the Celtics.

For Capital City, Labissiere finished with 29 points, seven rebounds and three blocks, while Richmond contributed 25 points, seven assists and five steals. Leaky Black added 15 points and six assists.

The statistical disparity was stark. Maine attempted 18 free throws, making 14, while Capital City went just 4 for 10 from the line. The Celtics also committed 22 turnovers, which Capital City converted into 28 points, but offset that by scoring 58 points in the paint.

With the win, Maine improved to 12-9 on the season, while Capital City fell to 9-10. The Celtics host the Salt Lake City Stars on Thursday, while the Go-Go return home to face the Motor City Cruise on Wednesday.
