Rio Grande Valley vs. Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — The Birmingham Squadron, led by a dominant performance from center Hunter Dickinson, erupted for a season-high in points to overwhelm the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 142-111 in a G League matchup on Tuesday night at Legacy Arena.

The game, a rematch of a Sunday contest won by the Vipers, turned decisively in the second quarter. After a competitive first period that ended with Birmingham holding a narrow 32-34 lead, the Squadron unleashed a 43-point offensive barrage in the second quarter to seize control. That outburst gave Birmingham a 75-59 halftime advantage, a margin they would only expand upon after the break.

The most important part of the game was Birmingham’s overwhelming second-quarter run, which transformed a close contest into a lopsided affair. The Squadron shot efficiently and shared the ball, outscoring the Vipers by 18 points in the frame. This surge established a tone of offensive invincibility that Rio Grande Valley could never counter, as Birmingham maintained a relentless scoring pace throughout the second half.

Dickinson, the 7-foot-1 center from Alexandria, Virginia, was the catalyst for Birmingham. He recorded a near triple-double with 27 points, 19 rebounds and eight assists in just 28 minutes, anchoring the Squadron on both ends of the floor. His performance marked a significant rebound from his outing in Sunday’s loss to the same Vipers team, where he was limited to 10 points and four rebounds.

He was far from alone. Birmingham’s backcourt of D.J. Carton and Trey Alexander provided prolific scoring and playmaking. Carton scored 25 points and dished out eight assists, while Alexander added 19 points and four assists. The Squadron’s frontcourt depth was also on full display, with Christian Shumate posting an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double and Josh Oduro contributing 17 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Rio Grande Valley, which fell to 7-7 with the loss, was led by Efe Abogidi’s 20 points and seven rebounds. Cameron Matthews scored 18 points, and Teddy Allen distributed seven assists to go with 12 points. The Vipers, however, had no answer for Birmingham’s sustained offensive firepower, which saw six Squadron players score in double figures.

Birmingham, which improved to 5-9, shot a high percentage from the field, though specific figures were not immediately available. The 142 points scored set a new season high for the Squadron and served as a stark contrast to their recent struggles, which included three consecutive losses prior to this victory.

The win provided a measure of revenge for Birmingham after dropping a 133-127 decision to the Vipers just two days earlier. The teams are not scheduled to meet again this regular season. Birmingham embarks on a six-game road trip beginning Saturday at Westchester, while Rio Grande Valley’s next game is at Sioux Falls on Dec. 31.
