Stockton vs. Rip City
PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — The Rip City Remix outlasted the Stockton Kings 116-110 in a back-and-forth G League contest decided by clutch free-throw shooting in the final seconds Monday afternoon at the Chiles Center.
The game, which saw 18 lead changes and neither team lead by more than nine points, was ultimately sealed at the foul line. With the Remix clinging to a 112-110 lead with 11 seconds remaining, Stockton’s Daeqwon Plowden committed a foul on Rip City’s Javonte Cooke. Cooke calmly sank both free throws to push the lead to four.
After a Stockton timeout, the Kings’ DaQuan Jeffries turned the ball over, with Cooke collecting the steal. Plowden fouled Cooke again immediately, and the Rip City guard hit two more free throws with six seconds left to provide the final margin. Dexter Dennis’ desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer missed for Stockton.
The victory improved both teams to an identical 8-5 record in the early season.
The game was characterized by offensive runs and resilient responses. Stockton opened the game hot, building an early 17-8 lead behind sharp 3-point shooting from Plowden and playmaking from Isaiah Stevens. The Kings led 39-30 after a high-scoring first quarter.
Rip City steadily chipped away, using a balanced attack. A key 9-0 run in the second quarter, capped by a Yang Hansen 3-pointer, gave the Remix their first lead at 35-34. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half, with Rip City taking a narrow 52-49 edge into the break.
The third quarter followed a similar pattern, with the Remix building a small lead only for the Kings to answer. Javonte Cooke’s third-quarter shooting was pivotal for Rip City, as he hit multiple 3-pointers to keep his team in front. Stockton’ Jaylin Williams provided a spark off the bench, hitting from deep to keep the Kings within striking distance, trailing 83-77 heading into the fourth.
The final period was a tense affair. Every Stockton push was met with a Rip City answer. After the Kings closed to within 104-101 on a Daeqwon Plowden 3-pointer with just over three minutes left, the Remix’s Rayan Rupert responded with a clutch 3-pointer on the next possession. Dillon Jones then hit a tough jumper and two critical free throws in the final 23 seconds to help secure the win.
Cooke led all scorers for Rip City, demonstrating composure in the closing moments. The Remix benefited from distributed scoring and timely assists, particularly from Dillon Jones, who facilitated the offense down the stretch. For Stockton, Plowden’s scoring and Stevens’ facilitation kept the Kings competitive throughout, but the team’s final-minute execution faltered against Rip City’s defensive pressure and foul-line precision.
The two teams are scheduled for a quick rematch Tuesday afternoon in Portland.
