Austin vs. Mexico City

MEXICO CITY (Interstat) — In a rematch just 48 hours after a narrow victory, the Austin Spurs delivered a far more decisive performance, defeating the Mexico City Capitanes 117-104 in a G League contest Wednesday night at Estadio Azteca.

The game turned decisively in the third quarter. After a high-scoring first half that saw the Capitanes take a 64-63 lead, the Austin defense clamped down, holding the home team to just 12 points in the period. The Spurs, meanwhile, maintained their offensive rhythm, outscoring Mexico City 24-12 to take an 87-76 lead into the final frame. That 11-point deficit proved insurmountable for the Capitanes, who could not mount a sustained comeback in the fourth quarter.

Austin center Micah Potter was the dominant force on the court, recording a game-high 29 points and 13 rebounds. His performance included three blocked shots and three steals, impacting the game on both ends. His inside presence and ability to stretch the floor, hitting three-pointers, kept the Mexico City defense off balance throughout the night.

The Capitanes were led by guard Boo Buie, who scored 21 points and dished out six assists. R.J. Melendez added 15 points and seven rebounds, while L.J. Figueroa finished with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists. Mexico City’s offense, which was efficient in the first half, stagnated after halftime, committing numerous turnovers against a active Spurs defense.

Austin improved its league-best record to 11-1 with the win, sweeping the two-game set in Mexico City after a 110-107 victory on Monday. The Spurs have now won 10 of their last 11 games. Mexico City fell to 5-8 with the loss.

The Spurs set the tone early with a 38-point second quarter to keep pace with a hot-shooting Capitanes team that led by as many as eight points in the first quarter. Austin’s depth and defensive adjustments after halftime, however, were the story. The Spurs forced Mexico City into difficult shots and capitalized on turnovers to build their lead.

The teams will not meet again until Dec. 27 in Austin. The Spurs continue their road trip with a back-to-back set at Texas on Friday and Saturday. Mexico City’s next game is also at Austin on that Dec. 27 date, followed by a two-game series at Oklahoma City.
