Long Island vs. Westchester
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (Interstat) -- The Long Island Nets built a massive first-half lead and withstood a furious third-quarter rally by the Westchester Knicks to secure a 115-95 victory in the NBA G League on Wednesday night at Westchester County Center.
The most important part of the game was the opening 18 minutes, during which Long Island established a commanding and ultimately insurmountable advantage. The Nets dominated from the opening tip, racing to a 33-19 lead after the first quarter and extending it to 64-34 by halftime. Their offensive execution was sharp, and their defense stifled the Knicks, holding the home team to just 34 points on 31% shooting in the half.
Long Island’s Trevon Scott was instrumental in the early barrage, scoring 11 points in the first quarter, including a dunk and a 3-pointer that helped fuel the initial surge. The Nets’ ball movement was exceptional, with Nolan Traore and Yuri Collins combining for 10 assists in the first half as Long Island shot 58% from the field.
The game’s momentum shifted dramatically in the third quarter, which became the secondary pivotal phase. Westchester, led by center Ariel Hukporti and forward Tosan Evbuomwan, erupted for 35 points. Hukporti scored 10 points in the quarter, while Evbuomwan added 11, part of his 19-point night. The Knicks used a 17-4 run to cut a 30-point deficit down to 12, injecting energy into the building and putting the Nets on their heels.
However, Long Island stabilized in the final minutes of the third. A Tyson Etienne 3-pointer at the buzzer, confirmed after a referee review, pushed the lead back to 15 and blunted Westchester’s momentum. The Nets then controlled the fourth quarter, answering every Knicks basket and never allowing the lead to dip below 13 points.
Hukporti finished with a double-double for Westchester, scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to go with four blocked shots. Mohamed Diawara added 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists, and Kevin McCullar had 13 points and eight assists. But the Knicks’ season struggles continued as they fell to 1-10.
Long Island, which improved to 6-7, featured a balanced attack with six players scoring in double figures, led by Scott’s 19 points. Ben Saraf, a 6-foot-6 point guard from Gan Yoshiya, Israel, contributed five points, six rebounds and five assists in 20 minutes off the bench.
The Nets’ victory defied the pregame analytics from Interstat, whose ELO system gave Westchester a 68.3% probability to win. The teams will meet again at the same venue on Friday.
The win provides a positive bounce-back for Long Island after an overtime loss to College Park on Tuesday. Westchester, meanwhile, has lost three straight and eight of its last nine.
