South Bay vs. Stockton

STOCKTON, Calif. (Interstat) — A matchup of Western Conference contenders with identical records will tip off the G League Showcase Cup schedule Tuesday when the Stockton Kings host the South Bay Lakers at Stockton Arena.

Both teams enter Tuesday’s contest at 6-4, looking to build momentum in the early-season tournament. The game is the first of a rare home-and-home set, with the teams scheduled to meet again Wednesday in Stockton.

South Bay arrives riding high after a 141-130 road victory over Rip City on Sunday, which snapped a three-game losing streak. The Lakers’ offense, which averages 119.2 points per game, will be tested by a Stockton defense that has shown vulnerability, allowing 132 points in a loss to Salt Lake City on Dec. 4.

The Kings, however, boast one of the league’s most dynamic scorers in guard Jameer Nelson Jr. He is averaging 24.1 points and 4.9 assists per game and is coming off a 22-point, 8-assist performance in Thursday’s loss. Nelson has scored 20 or more points in seven of his last eight outings.

A key for the Lakers will be the production of forward Luke Goode. After a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double in a loss at Salt Lake City on Dec. 2, Goode’s minutes and output have been inconsistent. His ability to stretch the floor and rebound will be crucial against a physical Stockton frontcourt that features Dylan Cardwell, who grabbed 14 rebounds in the last game.

Stockton’s offense, averaging a league-high 124.2 points per game, will look to exploit a South Bay defense that has allowed an average of 121.3 points during its recent skid. The Kings have been dominant at home, winning four of their five games at Stockton Arena this season.

The season series adds an extra layer, as the teams split two meetings last November, each winning on the other’s home floor. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST.
