Austin vs. Mexico City
AUSTIN SPURS (9-1) AT MEXICO CITY CAPITANES (4-6)
Preview
MEXICO CITY (Interstat) — The surging Austin Spurs, owners of the G League’s best record, will face a Mexico City Capitanes squad seeking stability when the teams meet Monday night at Estadio Azteca.
Austin (9-1) enters on a four-game winning streak following a 110-96 victory over Oklahoma City on Nov. 30. The Spurs have been dominant, averaging 120.2 points per game during their current run. Guard Jayden Nunn has been a central figure, coming off a 32-point, seven-rebound performance in the team’s last outing. Over his last five games, Nunn is averaging 24.2 points.
Mexico City (4-6) looks to rebound from a 125-107 road loss to Rio Grande Valley on Dec. 4. The Capitanes have struggled for consistency, alternating wins and losses over their past six contests. Forward L.J. Figueroa has been a bright spot, averaging 14.3 points and 7.3 rebounds over his last four games.
The matchup pits Austin’s high-powered offense against a Mexico City defense allowing 113.6 points per game. The Spurs have eclipsed 130 points twice this season. Austin’s Riley Minix, who had 23 points and nine rebounds against Oklahoma City, provides additional scoring punch alongside Nunn.
For the Capitanes, containing that attack will be paramount. Figueroa’s versatility and the backcourt play of Wade Taylor, who scored 15 points in the last game, will be critical. Mexico City has shown offensive capability, scoring 119 points in a win over Texas on Dec. 1, but must pair it with sustained defensive effort.
This game is the first of two meetings between the teams in December. They will meet again in Austin on Dec. 27.
The Spurs continue their road trip at Texas on Friday. The Capitanes host the Spurs again on Wednesday before a holiday break.
Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. local time Monday at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
