Rio Grande Valley vs. Austin

LEANDER, Texas (Interstat) — The Austin Spurs used a dominant second-quarter surge to overpower the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 118-100 in a G League matchup on Monday night at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.

The game was a tale of two halves, with the first quarter featuring a tightly contested battle. The Vipers opened the game with an alley-oop dunk from Efe Abogidi, assisted by Kevon Harris, but the Spurs quickly responded with a pair of three-pointers from Stanley Umude. The teams traded baskets throughout the period, with Rio Grande Valley’s Daishen Nix and Austin’s Jayden Nunn exchanging scores. The first quarter ended with the Spurs holding a narrow 30-28 lead.

The momentum shifted decisively in the second quarter. The Spurs exploded for 41 points, overwhelming the Vipers with a potent offensive display. Austin’s ball movement and shooting were superior, as they built a substantial lead by halftime. The Spurs’ 71 points in the first half highlighted their offensive efficiency, while the Vipers’ 57 points, though respectable, left them with a significant deficit to overcome.

Rio Grande Valley attempted to mount a comeback in the third quarter, matching the Spurs nearly point for point, with both teams scoring 29. The Vipers relied on the playmaking of Daishen Nix and the interior presence of Efe Abogidi to keep pace, but they were unable to cut meaningfully into the Austin lead, trailing 99-86 heading into the final period.

Any hope of a Vipers rally was extinguished in the fourth quarter as their offense stalled, managing only 14 points. The Spurs’ defense tightened, and their lead proved insurmountable. Austin cruised through the final minutes to secure the 18-point victory, sweeping the two-game set after also winning on Sunday.

The win improves the Austin Spurs’ season record to 7-1, solidifying their strong start to the G League campaign. The Rio Grande Valley Vipers fall to 3-4 with the loss. The Spurs’ next game is at home against Oklahoma City on Friday. The Vipers return home to face Osceola on Saturday.
