Cleveland vs. Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (Interstat) — The Iowa Wolves opened their G League season with a high-octane offensive showcase, outlasting the Cleveland Charge 137-124 on Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

A staggering 44-point second quarter propelled the Wolves to the victory, turning a competitive game into a commanding lead they would not relinquish. The period saw Iowa erase a 15-point deficit and build a double-digit advantage by halftime.

Jules Bernard led the charge for Iowa, scoring 23 points and adding eight rebounds and five assists. Zyon Pullin was equally instrumental, pouring in 25 points and dishing out seven assists. The Wolves’ frontcourt was anchored by Enrique Freeman, who recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Despite the loss, the Cleveland Charge had several standout performances. Darius Brown orchestrated the offense with 17 points and seven assists. Chaney Johnson provided a spark with 20 points, five assists and three blocked shots, while Chris Livingston, a native of Akron, Ohio, flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 20 points, five rebounds and nine assists. Norchad Omier also notched a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The game began as a back-and-forth affair, with Cleveland establishing an early lead. The Charge’s offense was efficient in the opening quarter, capped by a Miller Kopp driving layup in the final seconds to give them a 38-23 lead.

The momentum shifted dramatically in the second quarter. The Wolves’ offense caught fire, embarking on a 24-6 run that included a pair of three-pointers from Donte Ingram. Iowa’s defense also tightened, forcing several Cleveland turnovers and converting them into easy transition baskets. By the time Enrique Freeman tipped in a miss just before the halftime buzzer, the Wolves had secured a 67-60 lead.

Iowa maintained its offensive pressure in the third quarter, extending its lead. The Wolves’ ball movement was exceptional, leading to high-percentage shots, while their defense continued to challenge the Charge. The fourth quarter saw Cleveland attempt to mount a comeback, but each Charge run was answered by timely baskets from Iowa, primarily from Pullin and Bernard, to secure the season-opening win.

With the victory, the Iowa Wolves begin their season 1-0, while the Cleveland Charge start 0-1. The two teams are scheduled for a quick rematch at Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday night. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Cleveland with a 58.30 percent probability to win.
