Banda’s early goal lifts Lecce past Genoa 1‑0

LECCE, Italy (Interstat) — Lameck Banda scored in the sixth minute and Lecce made it hold up for a 1-0 victory over Genoa on Sunday, May 24, at Stadio Comunale Ettore Giardiniero in the Serie A season opener for both clubs.

Banda’s strike was the lone goal of the match. Lecce’s defense then denied Genoa any scoring opportunities for the remainder of the game. The visitors pushed for an equalizer, especially in the second half, but could not break through.

Two yellow cards were issued. Lecce midfielder Ylber Ramadani was booked in first-half stoppage time. Genoa defender Tiago Gabriel received a yellow card in the 76th minute.

Lecce improved to 1-0 in Serie A and in all competitions. Genoa fell to 0-1 in league play and overall. The clean sheet marked a strong start for Lecce’s campaign. The victory put Lecce at the top of the early standings with three points. Genoa, meanwhile, left the field searching for answers after a scoreless outing.
