Toluca vs Pachuca

MEXICO CITY (Interstat) — A season of wild inconsistency meets a stretch of stumbles as Toluca hosts Pachuca on Sunday in a Liga MX clash that carries playoff implications for both sides.

The game, set for 7 p.m. local time at Estadio Nemesio Díez, brings together two clubs desperate for a win. Toluca enters after a roller-coaster week: a thrilling 4-3 victory at Cruz Azul on Sunday, followed by a 4-1 thumping of León on Saturday. But those highs were sandwiched between a 4-3 loss at Mazatlán on Wednesday and a 7-2 drubbing at Tijuana last Saturday.

Pachuca, meanwhile, arrives on the heels of a 2-0 loss at home to Pumas UNAM on Saturday — just their second defeat in their last nine matches. The Tuzos had been on a 4-1-1 run before that setback, including a 3-1 win at Tijuana and a 2-1 victory over Tigres.

The head-to-head history offers little clarity. Their most recent meeting, March 22, ended 1-1 in Pachuca. The previous matchup, Oct. 26, also finished 2-2 in Toluca. Sunday’s game could follow suit: Interstat’s game simulator projects a 1-1 draw.

Toluca’s attack has been potent but porous. They’ve scored at least three goals in three of their last five matches, but they’ve also conceded 14 goals in that span — including seven to Tijuana. Forward Brian García has been a bright spot, while midfielder Claudio Baeza returned from injury in the Cruz Azul win.

Pachuca has been steadier, if unspectacular. Striker Roberto de la Rosa has five goals in his last seven appearances, and the team’s 4-3-3 has produced consistent possession. But the defense, led by center back Kevin Álvarez, has allowed multiple goals in three of the last five.

Both teams sit in the middle of the Liga MX table. A win could propel either into the top eight for playoff positioning. A draw would leave both hovering.

The game also marks the third meeting between the clubs this season — and the first in which both will be fully focused on league form rather than cup competitions.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. local. Weather forecasts call for clear skies, temperatures around 70 degrees.
