Sonderjyske vs Midtjylland W
HADERSLEV, Denmark (Interstat) — Edward Chilufya scored in the first half and Matthew Hoppe and Daníel Leó Grétarsson added second-half goals Thursday as Midtjylland W defeated Sonderjyske 2-1 at Sydbank Park in a Danish Superliga match.
Chilufya opened the scoring in the 24th minute, putting the visitors ahead early. Hoppe doubled Midtjylland W’s lead in the 40th minute, but picked up a yellow card in first-half stoppage time. Grétarsson pulled one back for Sonderjyske in the 49th minute, but the home side could not find an equalizer.
Four substitutes each recorded an assist for Midtjylland W. Mikel Krüger-Johnsen, Philip Billing, Kevin Mbabu and Lee Hanbeom all provided one assist apiece, with Lee also receiving a yellow card in the 48th minute. Billing was cautioned in the 78th minute, Mbabu in the 90th plus three minutes and Krüger-Johnsen in the 90th plus five.
The victory improved Midtjylland W’s Superliga record to 12 wins, 3 losses and 6 draws, while Sonderjyske fell to 8 wins, 7 losses and 6 draws. Across all competitions this season, Midtjylland W now stands at 27 wins, 9 losses and 11 draws; Sonderjyske has 14 wins, 12 losses and 8 draws.
Midtjylland W entered the match after a 2-1 home win over ASA Aarhus on Apr. 20 and a 2-1 victory at Brøndby IF on Apr. 12. The visitors had also drawn with Sonderjyske 2-2 on Apr. 4 in their previous head-to-head meeting. Sonderjyske came in on a losing note, having been routed 6-0 at Brondby on Apr. 17, and had lost 2-0 to Viborg FF on Apr. 12.
The recent head-to-head series had been tightly contested. In addition to the Apr. 4 draw, Midtjylland W lost 2-1 at Sonderjyske on Nov. 23, 2025, but had won 6-2 on Jul. 28, 2025.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of 2-1 in favor of Midtjylland W, matching the actual result. However, the same company’s ELO system had given Sonderjyske a 66.70 percent probability to win, a projection that proved incorrect.
The match was played in Haderslev, with Sonderjyske seeking to rebound from a string of poor results. The home side had managed only one win in its previous five Superliga matches, a 2-0 victory over FC Copenhagen on Dec. 7, 2025. Since then, Sonderjyske had lost to Nordsjaelland twice, drawn with Viborg and lost to Brondby by a combined margin of 10-0.
Midtjylland W, meanwhile, had been in solid form, winning three of its last four league fixtures, including a 4-0 victory over Silkeborg IF on Feb. 22 and a 4-1 triumph over Odense BK on Feb. 15. The team also posted a 2-0 win over GNK Dinamo Zagreb in European competition on Jan. 29.
The victory kept Midtjylland W in contention near the top of the Superliga table, while Sonderjyske remained mired in the middle of the standings.
In the 24th minute, Chilufya’s goal gave the visitors an early advantage that they would not relinquish. Hoppe’s strike just before halftime extended the lead, and despite Grétarsson’s goal early in the second half, Sonderjyske could not break through again.
The match featured five yellow cards, with three coming in the second half and one in added time after the 90th minute. Six of the seven goals and assists in the game came from players who entered as substitutes, with Krüger-Johnsen, Billing, Mbabu and Lee all contributing from the bench.
Sonderjyske had opportunities but could not convert. The home side’s defense, which had conceded six goals in its previous match against Brondby, held Midtjylland W to two goals but could not prevent the loss.
The result marked the second time this season that Midtjylland W had beaten Sonderjyske in Haderslev, following the 6-2 win in July. For Sonderjyske, it was a frustrating outcome after a competitive first half.
The Superliga season continues with both teams facing demanding schedules. Midtjylland W will look to build on the win, while Sonderjyske will seek to halt a slide that has seen them lose four of their last six matches across all competitions.
