Sint-Truiden vs Club Brugge
BRUGES, Belgium (Interstat) — Substitute Hugo Vetlesen scored a goal and added an assist to lead Club Brugge to a 2-1 comeback victory over Sint-Truiden in the Belgian First Division A on Saturday.
The match, played before a crowd at Daio Wasabi Stayen Stadium, saw the visiting side overcome an early deficit to secure three points and continue its strong form in the domestic league.
Sint-Truiden opened the scoring in the 22nd minute through forward Ryōtarō Itō, who finished an assist from midfielder Ilias Sebaoui. The home side’s lead held until just before halftime, when Club Brugge leveled the match.
In the 48th minute, Vetlesen, who had entered the game as a substitute, found the net to make it 1-1. The goal was set up by an unusual source: Club Brugge goalkeeper Leo Kokubo, who was shown a yellow card on the same play for his involvement in the sequence.
Vetlesen then turned provider for the decisive goal in the 58th minute. His pass found fellow substitute Christos Tzolis, who scored to put Club Brugge ahead 2-1.
The match grew increasingly tense in the final stages, with four yellow cards issued after the 87th minute. Sint-Truiden’s Oumar Diouf was booked in the 87th minute, and a scuffle in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time resulted in yellow cards for both Vetlesen and Club Brugge substitute Jorne Spileers, who was credited with an assist on Tzolis’s winner.
The result improved Club Brugge’s First Division A record to 16 wins, 7 losses and 3 draws this season. Sint-Truiden’s league record moved to 16 wins, 10 losses and 2 draws.
The victory extended Club Brugge’s recent dominance in the fixture, avenging a 3-2 home loss to Sint-Truiden on Dec. 6. In the previous meeting this season on Sept. 21, Club Brugge had won 2-0.
The match defied the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 2-2 draw. The same service’s ELO rating system gave Club Brugge a 60.4% probability of winning outright.
Club Brugge entered the contest on a high note, having defeated rival Anderlecht 4-2 on Monday. Sint-Truiden arrived seeking a rebound after a 1-0 loss to Union St-Gilloise on April 4.
The win keeps Club Brugge firmly in contention near the top of the league table, while Sint-Truiden will look to regroup after a narrow defeat in a closely contested match.
