Augsburg Upsets Leverkusen in Bundesliga Opener Behind Rieder’s Late Brace
LEVERKUSEN, Germany (Interstat) — Augsburg opened its Bundesliga season with a 2-1 upset victory over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday at BayArena.
Patrik Schick gave the hosts an early lead in the 12th minute, but substitute Fabian Rieder equalized just three minutes later. Rieder then scored the decisive goal in second-half stoppage time to complete the comeback. His two goals and one assist defined the match.
The result defied pregame projections that heavily favored Leverkusen, which began its title defense with a loss. Augsburg’s Jarrell Quansah and Leverkusen’s Aleix García received yellow cards in a physical contest.
