Lille vs Nantes
VILLENEUVE-D’ASCQ, France (Interstat) — Nathan Ngoy scored deep into second-half stoppage time to lift Lille to a dramatic 1-0 victory over Nantes in a Ligue 1 match Sunday at Decathlon Arena - Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
The match, which appeared destined for a scoreless draw, was decided in the fourth minute of added time. The sequence began with a Lille corner kick. Veteran forward Olivier Giroud, who entered the match as a second-half substitute, flicked the initial service toward the back post. Midfielder Benjamin André kept the play alive, heading the ball back across the face of the goal. There, defender Nathan Ngoy arrived to power a close-range header into the net, sending the home supporters into a frenzy.
Ngoy’s goal, his first of the young season, capped a standout individual performance in which he was also instrumental in setting up several key chances. The decisive strike came against the run of the final minutes, as Nantes had grown into the match and looked the more likely to find a late winner themselves.
The result gave Lille a winning start to its domestic campaign, improving its record to one win and no losses in Ligue 1 play. Nantes, meanwhile, began its season with a narrow defeat, falling to no wins and one loss.
The match was a physical and often cagey affair, reflected in four yellow cards issued by the officiating crew. Lille substitute Mohamed Kaba was booked in the 17th minute for a tactical foul. The game’s intensity peaked in the 76th minute when two more cautions were issued simultaneously, one to Lille’s Benjamin André and another to his teammate Olivier Giroud, following a midfield scuffle. Ngoy received a yellow card for his exuberant goal celebration immediately after his winner in the dying moments.
Statistically, the match defied some pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had forecast a 1-1 draw. However, the same organization’s ELO rating system had given Lille a significant 81.7 percent probability of securing a victory, a prediction borne out by the final result, albeit in far more dramatic fashion than many anticipated.
Lille’s defense, marshaled by the goal-scoring Ngoy, held firm to secure the clean sheet, effectively neutralizing the Nantes attack throughout the 90 minutes. The home side controlled large stretches of possession but struggled to break down a disciplined Nantes back line until the final moments of the contest.
With the victory, Lille secured three points to begin its pursuit of the French league title. Nantes will look to rebound from the last-gasp defeat when it continues its Ligue 1 schedule next weekend.
