Heracles vs Excelsior
ALMELO, Netherlands (Interstat) — In a match that defied pregame projections, Heracles and Excelsior played to a 1-1 draw on Friday afternoon in an Eredivisie fixture at Erve Asito.
The result, which saw both clubs open their league campaigns with a point, came despite statistical models heavily favoring the home side. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 2-1 victory for Heracles, while its ELO system gave the Almelo-based club a 76.5% probability of winning.
The game’s tempo was set early with physical play, as Excelsior defender Jannes Wieckhoff received a yellow card in the 14th minute. The breakthrough came less than 10 minutes later. In the 23rd minute, Heracles midfielder Sem Scheperman opened the scoring, finishing an attacking sequence to give the home side the lead. The assist was credited to defender Ivan Mesík.
Heracles carried that advantage toward halftime, but Excelsior found an equalizer in the 57th minute. Substitute forward Derensili Fernandes, who had entered the match, leveled the score with a well-taken goal. The assist came from fellow substitute Szymon Włodarczyk, whose entry helped change the dynamic for the visiting side.
The latter stages of the match grew increasingly tense and chippy. A notable flashpoint occurred in the 80th minute, when yellow cards were issued simultaneously to Excelsior’s Ivan Mesík and Heracles’ Szymon Włodarczyk. Heracles forward Mario Engels also saw a yellow in the 87th minute as both teams pressed unsuccessfully for a late winner.
The final whistle confirmed a share of the points, leaving each team with identical records to start the Eredivisie season: zero wins, zero losses and one draw. Their overall records across all competitions also mirror each other at 0-0-1.
Key performances included the goal-scorers, Scheperman for Heracles and Fernandes for Excelsior. Defenders also played a notable role in the attack, with Excelsior’s Jannes Wieckhoff recording an assist on the visitors’ goal and Heracles’ Ivan Mesík setting up his team’s lone score.
The match was organized by the Eredivisie, the top professional football division in the Netherlands.
