Substitutes Spark Nigeria to Upset Win Over Algeria in Cup of Nations Opener
MARRAKECH, Morocco (Interstat) — Nigeria opened its Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2-0 upset of Algeria on Saturday, defying pregame projections at the Grand Stade de Marrakech.
Victor Osimhen broke a stalemate just before halftime, heading home in the 47th minute. Substitute Akor Adams doubled the lead 10 minutes later with a left-footed finish. The goals came against the run of statistical favor, as Algeria had been projected a heavy favorite to win.
The match was a physical affair, with nine yellow cards issued. Nigeria’s victory handed Algeria a losing start in the tournament.
