Leon vs Necaxa
LEON, Guanajuato (Interstat) — Leon opened its Liga MX season with a comeback victory, defeating Necaxa 2-1 on Saturday night at Estadio León behind a late winner from substitute Juan Domínguez.
The home side, favored pre-match with a 60.4 percent win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, overcame a halftime deficit to secure three points. The result defied the statistical service’s game simulator, which had projected a 1-1 draw.
Necaxa, the visiting side, stunned the home crowd just before the halftime whistle. In the third minute of first-half stoppage time, defender Agustín Oliveros found the net to give his team a 1-0 lead. The goal came after a period of sustained pressure from the hosts, marking a classic counter-punch.
The momentum shifted decisively in the 65th minute. Leon forward Diber Cambindo, the team’s key offensive performer on the night, leveled the score with a well-taken finish. The assist came from fellow substitute Franco Rossano, who had entered the match to provide a spark.
Leon completed the turnaround just four minutes later. Domínguez secured the victory for Los Esmeraldas in the 69th minute, converting a chance to put his side ahead for the first time in the match. The quick one-two punch in the middle of the second half proved insurmountable for Necaxa.
The match was a physical contest, with three yellow cards issued by the officiating crew. Necaxa’s Ricardo Monreal was booked in the 49th minute, followed by goal-scorer Oliveros in the 57th minute for a subsequent infraction. Rossano, the Leon substitute, received a yellow card deep into second-half stoppage time, in the 97th minute.
With the victory, Leon begins its Liga MX campaign with a perfect record of one win and no losses. The club’s overall record across all competitions also moves to 1-0-0. Necaxa starts its season with a loss, holding a record of 0-1-0 in the league and an identical mark in all competitions.
The match was the season opener for both clubs in Mexico’s top-flight division. Leon will look to build on the momentum of its opening-day comeback in its next fixture, while Necaxa seeks to rebound from a match where it held an early advantage but could not see out the result.
