GENK EDGES DENDER IN BELGIAN FIRST DIVISION A OPENER

DENDERLEEUW, Belgium (Interstat) — Visiting Genk opened its Belgian First Division A campaign with a 2-1 victory over Dender on Sunday, overcoming an early deficit with two quick goals and a disciplined defensive performance at the DENDER Football Complex.

The match, which defied a pregame statistical projection of a draw, was decided in a frantic opening sequence. Against the run of early play, the home side struck first. Dender forward Bruny Nsimba found substitute Daan Heymans in the third minute, and Heymans finished clinically to give the hosts a surprising early lead.

The advantage was short-lived. Genk responded with immediate force, leveling the score just five minutes later. In the eighth minute, a build-up involving defender Kobe Cools and goalkeeper Gauthier Gallon culminated in Heymans finding the net again for his second goal, stunning the home crowd and swinging momentum decisively in Genk’s favor.

Genk carried that momentum through the first half and eventually found the winner in the 58th minute. Nsimba, who had provided the earlier assist, redeemed himself after a first-half yellow card by scoring a goal of his own. The play was orchestrated by midfielder Nathan Rôdes and substitute Oh Hyeongyu, with Nsimba applying the final touch to make it 2-1.

The game’s physical intensity escalated in the final moments, resulting in a flurry of yellow cards in second-half stoppage time. Genk’s Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Dender’s Nathan Rôdes, Genk’s Oh Hyeongyu and Dender goalkeeper Gauthier Gallon were all booked between the 90th and 96th minutes, reflecting the tense conclusion as Dender pushed unsuccessfully for an equalizer.

The result provided a positive start for Genk in league play, moving its record to 1-0-0, while Dender begins the season at 0-0-1. The outcome also contrasted with pregame analytics from Interstat, whose game simulator had projected a 1-1 draw. Their ELO rating system, however, had given Genk a 74.4 percent probability to win, a forecast that proved accurate.

Key performances defined the match. For Dender, the bright spot was the two-goal contribution off the bench from Daan Heymans, while Bruny Nsimba’s goal and assist kept the home side in contention. Genk’s victory was built on a balanced team effort, with assists spread among five different players—Cools, Gallon, Jahanbakhsh, Rôdes and Oh—highlighting a multifaceted attack.

The match was the season opener for both clubs in Belgium’s top flight.
