Argentina vs Algeria

Argentina, Algeria Face Off in World Cup Opener

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Interstat) — Argentina opens its World Cup campaign Tuesday against Algeria, a matchup that pits a South American powerhouse against an African side seeking to end a half-century of competitive obscurity.

The match, organized by FIFA, is scheduled for June 16, 2026, at a venue to be announced. Argentina enters as the home team, but the reigning world champions are coming off a rare defeat.

Argentina’s most recent result was a 1-0 loss at Ecuador on Sept. 9, 2025. That defeat — only their second in a dozen matches this cycle — followed a dominant run that included a 4-1 home win over Brazil and a 6-0 thrashing of Bolivia.

Three Argentine players logged the full 90 minutes against Ecuador: forward Damián Emiliano Martínez Romero, midfielder Alexis Mac Allister and midfielder Nicolás Iván González. Manager Lionel Scaloni is expected to rely heavily on that trio to spark an attack that has scored 18 goals in its last seven wins.

Argentina’s other results this season underscore its consistency: a 3-0 victory at Venezuela on Sept. 4, 2025; a 1-1 draw at Colombia on June 10; a 1-0 win at Chile on June 5; a 4-1 home triumph over Brazil on March 26; a 1-0 win at Uruguay on March 22; a 1-0 victory at Peru on Nov. 20, 2024; a 2-1 loss at Paraguay on Nov. 14; a 6-0 win at Bolivia on Oct. 15; a 1-1 draw at Venezuela on Oct. 10; and a 2-1 loss at Colombia on Sept. 10, 2024.

Algeria’s recent form is far more opaque. The team’s last recorded competitive result was a match on Jan. 1, 1970, leaving a 56-year gap in available data. No players, goals or venue were listed for that outing.

Despite the lack of recent match data, Algeria’s potential should not be dismissed. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 1-0 victory for the visiting side, suggesting the Desert Foxes could pull an opening-day upset.

Argentina’s path through the group stage is clear: a match against Austria on Monday, June 22, 2026, followed by a meeting with Jordan on Saturday, June 27. Algeria also faces Austria on June 27, after playing Jordan on June 22.

Tuesday’s kickoff is set for 9 p.m. local time.
