Velez Sarsfield vs River Plate

BUENOS AIRES (Interstat) — A pivotal Primera Nacional clash is set for Sunday as River Plate visits Velez Sarsfield, with both Argentine giants looking to reverse recent slides.

River Plate (7-6-5) enters the match at Velez’s Estadio José Amalfitani following a 2-0 loss to archrival Boca Juniors on Nov. 9. That defeat extended a concerning run of form, as River has lost four of its last five league matches, being shut out in three of those losses.

Velez Sarsfield (6-4-4) is also seeking momentum after a 2-0 defeat to Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata on Nov. 10. That loss snapped a brief two-game unbeaten streak for the hosts.

Despite Velez holding a superior overall record across all competitions (20-17-12) compared to River Plate’s (13-11-9), their league campaigns have been similarly inconsistent. River Plate sits just above Velez in the tightly-contested Primera Nacional table.

Historically, matches between these two clubs are fiercely contested affairs. The statistical service Interstat projects a 3-1 victory for the visiting River Plate, suggesting their offensive quality is expected to overcome their recent struggles and Velez’s home-field advantage.

Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 16, 2025.
