CAGLIARI, Italy (Interstat) — Gianluca Gaetano’s 82nd-minute goal gave Cagliari a 1-0 victory over AS Roma in their Serie A opener Sunday at Unipol Domus.

The match turned in the 52nd minute when Roma defender Zeki Çelik was sent off with a red card. Cagliari capitalized late when Gaetano finished a sequence involving assists from Michael Folorunsho and substitute Mario Hermoso. The goal came shortly after both Folorunsho and Hermoso received yellow cards in the 78th minute; Gaetano was also booked for his celebration.

The result defied a pregame projection that favored Roma. Cagliari begins its season with a win, while Roma starts with a loss.
